Holographic Winter Snowflakes Background

Welcome to my blog! I am sharing another winter/christmas inspired card with you!

I have a quick and easy technique to create a stunning background winter background for your holiday or winter cards. This card was inspired by one of the cards Scott of CardCutUps made in one of his videos. Scott has been creating with Hero Arts My Monthly Hero kits for several years now and I always look to him for inspiration. I took the Hand Drawn Snowflakes background cling stamp from Hero Arts and placed it on my craft mat with the stamp design facing up. I inked up the stamp generously with Versamark ink, a sticky embossing ink.  Then I took some watercolor paper which I had cut down to the same size as my stamp and place it gently on top of the inked stamp. I pressed the paper down on all sides taking care not to move the paper. I used my fingers to gently rub the surface of the paper to make sure the inks sticks. I lifted the paper up from the stamp and sprinkled holographic embossing powder all over. I then tapped off the excess powder then heat set it using my heat gun.

I took the embossed panel and taped it down on all sides on my craft mat with washi tape. I sprayed the panel with water then sprinkled Blue Blitz Nuvo shimmer powder.

Then I sprayed the panel generously with water and used a paintbrush to move the pigment around until I got the desired effect. I set aside to dry. You could also use a heat gun to speed up the drying process.

I then decided that the background looked a little too washed out, so I sprinkled Violet Brocade Shimmer Powder to add a little more depth.  I sprayed with water and then used my paintbrush to move the pigment.

You can use this same technique with most water-soluble mediums like traditional watercolors or even watercolor markers.  Just apply the pigments onto the paper and spray generously with water!

I stamped out the car and gift images from the October 2019 Hero Arts My Monthly Hero Kit with Memento Black Ink and colored them with Copics. I love the mid-century inspired design of this kit, which, by the way, is still available for purchase!

For the snowy hills, I used a stitched hills die. After die-cutting it, I ink blended some Salty Ocean Distress Oxide Ink at the top of the hills. Then I stamped out the sentiment Merry Christmas from the same stamp set with Obsidian Ink and heat embossed it with Holographic embossing powder.

I adhered the snowy hills with foam tape for some dimension after cutting down the embossed background to 4.25”X5.5”. Then I added the car and gifts onto the panel also using foam tape. I mounted the finished design on to a top folding horizontal 4.25”X5.5” card.
