Out of this World! Galaxy Background Techniques: Squirrel Gone Nutz Blog Hop

Hi everyone! squad and I are back with another fun hop! If you are following along, you have just come from the wonderful Karen! This month’s theme is Galaxy/Night sky with a celebration theme. If you are new to our hop, we are a small group of crafty friends who inspire each other. We encourage each other to use those items in our stash that we hardly use or just simply “squirreled” away!

It’s been awhile since I posted a video tutorial on my YouTube channel so I was glad to be able to find a reason to! I only use the three primary colors, red, blue and yellow along with black (and of course white for the stars!) to make lovely galaxy backgrounds. Click on the YouTube link below!

Here is a close-up look at the three backgrounds I made using three different coloring mediums!

Here are the three cards I made with the backgrounds. They all have a different look and feel but it gives you an idea of different ways to use Galaxy backgrounds.

Card #1: Celebrating the New Year

This card I used Nuvo Shimmer Powder in Solar Flare, Cherry Bomb and Blue Blitz, as well as Storm Cloud for the dark areas. I used Brutus Monroe Fallen Snow Glitter Glaze stenciled on top of the background with the Shooting Star stencil from Hero Arts. I had some Holographic Starburst cardstock in my stash which I have had for so long! I am so glad that using holo cardstock is trendy again so I get to use it!

I die cut the word celebrate from the Hero Arts Birthday Stamp & Cut XL and the “New Year” sentiment is silver heat embossed from the Celebrate Everyday stamp set also from Hero Arts.

I finished it off by adhering some Satin Silver Baubles from Trinity Stamps. I then mounted it on the same holographic cardstock.

Card #2: Fairytale Scene

In this card I used liquid watercolors for the Galaxy Night sky background. The frame is die-cut from pitch black cardstock using the Hero Arts Nature Border Window Die. I inkblended some Unicorn White pigment ink in some areas to give it a glow from the stars or from the moon hiding behind the trees.

I colored the elements from the My Monthly Hero July 2021 kit with copic markers – keeping it fairly simple. I heat embossed the sentiment “Warm Wishes” with white embossing powder. The sentiment is from the Merry Snowmen stamp set.

Card #3: Clean & Simple Silhouette

For my final card, I used the Galaxy background I ink blended with Distress Oxide – Salty Ocean, Mustard Seed & Festive Berries. I also used Black Soot distress Oxide. I used one of my favorite dies, the Hero Arts tri-fold Winter Pine to do some partial die cutting along with one of the round dies from the Round Infinity die set.

First I partially die cut the round opening, stopping a little short of cutting all the way. Then I placed one of the dies from the tri-fold Winter Pine set and lined it up with the edges of the ares where the round die-cut ended. Then I placed it back in my die-cutting machine and cut it but not all the way, just enough to create this silhouette. The white textured cardstock I used is also an old one from my stash.

Then I stamped the sentiment “Peace & Love to You and Yours” with Intens-ified Black ink. The sentiment is from the Christmas Messages stamp set.

I hope you inspired by my projects and maybe learned something new. Next on the hop is the lovely, Marie!

‘Til next time!

  1. HA, look who cranked out a Christmas card! And it wasn’t me! I love all of your cards, Anna. They all look so different and that glow on the fairytale scene is fabulous! 🙂

  2. Oh wow! These cards are stunning, Anna! Similar but not same at all galaxies! Love so much the New Year one: the shimmer powders are so vibrant and I’m sure the sparkle is gorgeous in person! The fairytale scene is just adorable, especially that little gnome 🙂 The Christmas card gives me the vibe of a calm winter night. You did a great job!
