What’s the Poin-settia!

This month’s Papercraft Business Challenge is Anything Goes! My inspiration for this challenge is a tag. I have to admit, I am not confident in creating tags. I don’t know why but I find it a bit intimidating. Maybe its the limited space on which to create? Don’t get me wrong, I love tags and I am a huge fan of crafters that can easily create them! I sometimes think “whats the point” in making tags when I struggle so much? But making this tag I can see the point now — to challenge myself and to get past whatever is intimidating me.

For my inspiration project, I decided on a non-traditional Christmas color palette – black & red. I don’t know what it is about this combination but it really appeals to me.

I took a look at my bin of scraps and found this black & white background I had made for a previous project. It was not stamped perfectly but I had set it aside anyway. This background stamp is Altenew Shine Like a Diamond stamped in Hero Arts Intens-ified black ink.

I die cut the panel using the biggest tag die from the Sizzix Framelits Tim Holtz Tag Collection Die set. I’ve had these tag dies in my stash since forever but never got around to use it until now.

I took the Poinsettia Layering Dies from Hero Arts and die cut the flowers from red cardstock and the leaves from green cardstock – all from my bin of scraps. To create a look of dimension, I took an R89 copic marker and colored the middle area of each poinsettia petal cluster. I then blended it outwards with an R29.

For the leaves, I used G89, YG17 & G29. I was not too concerned about making the blending absolutely perfect because I knew I was going to paint over it with shimmer.

Then I took Irridescent Shimmer watercolor ink also from a previous Hero Arts kit and painted it on top of each petal and leaf to give it a nice shimmery coat.

I then adhered the petals together with little bits of foam tape to give it more dimension. I finished off the poinsettia with five holographic rhinestone baubles from Trinity Stamps in the middle and adhered it on the right hand corner of the tag.

I used a We Are Memory Keepers Reinforcer Punch to punch out hole reinforcers from the same red cardstock I used for the poinsettia. I then attached a black 3/4″ gross grain ribbon with a 1/4″ red satin ribbon. I cinched it at the top of the tag with a 1/8″ wide silver sparkle ribbon.

I did struggle a little with this tag with deciding where to put the pointsettia or what ribbon to match it with etc. But in the end I am happy with how it turned out and I am going to make it my new year’s resolution to create more tags!
