Layer by Layer: Faux Metallic Watercolor Dip Dye Technique

A few weeks ago I was feeling a bit uninspired to create. I don’t know if it was because of the situation happening in the world right now or just feeling burnt out. Whenever I feel this way I look to take an online card making class. It was just around that time Kristina Werner and Jennifer Mcguire announced the Spring Card Camp Class 2 from their Online Card Classes. I had taken the first Card Camp and I found lots of inspiration so I jumped at the opportunity to take round two — to help my creative juices flowing. And flowing it did!

One of the classes I took was Kristina Werner teaching faux dip dye card. This is not a new technique but it was very nice to be inspired to give it a try. I took that inspiration and put my own little twist to it by painting with metallic watercolors instead of regular watercolors. This was the perfect inspiration for this watercolor challenge!

The technique is fairly simple. it’s all about layering colors down on watercolor cardstock. The trick is to use a gradiation of color from light to dark. And to heat set or dry the layers before putting down the next darkest color. Use good quality watercolor cardstock for this technique.

To finish off the card, I silver heat embossed the HUGS sentiment from Altenew Hello & Hugs Die set twice to create a very dimensional effect. I also silver heat embossed the torn edges to give it a more elegant look.

In case you are interested in the Spring Card Camp, I will link it here. I’ll see you over at the Happy Little Stampers Watercolor Challenge!

‘Til next time!
