Simply Marble-lous! Faux Marble Background Technique: A Squirrels Gone Nutz Blog Hop

Hello! If you are following along our monthly hop, you have just come from the lovely V Fairchild! If you happen by chance, welcome to the our monthly Squirrel Gone Nutz blog hop where the wonderful squirrel squad will wow you with their creative talent! Each month we randomly pick a technique paired with a theme and this month its marble/marbling with elegance! We also use one or more items from our crafty stash that we have not used in a long while and have just squirreled away.

I have a marble background stamp and it would have been the easiest thing to just use it! In fact, I have a blog post about another technique using this marble background, which I will link here. But I decided to step up to the challenge and this is the technique what I came up with (with some encouragement from my sweet squirrel sisters!

For this technique, I used Nuvo Shimmer Powders. I haven’t used them in over a year and I thought this would be the perfect technique to break them out. I have a video linked here where I show how I created this marbled background. Its super quick and easy and if you like playing with watercolors, then its a lot of fun too!

I taped down a watercolor panel and sprinkled powder sparingly on the paper. These powders are so pigmented and a little goes a long way. Then I sprayed the panel generously with water. The pigment started to bloom and spread.

I took a small paintbrush and took it the paper and drew some lines across the paper mimicking the lines of a marble background. I also kept a paper towel handy to soak up excess water from the panel. I took a heat tool to the panel to speed up the drying process.

To add a touch of elegance to the marbled background, I decided to add some shine. I took my versamark ink mini ink cube and dabbed it on some areas and then I took an embossing pen and scribbled lines across the panel. I sprinkled Antique Gold embossing powder all over the panel, then tapped off the excess. I used a small paintbrush to brush excess powder in areas where I felt had too much. When I was satisfied with it, I used a heat gun to heat set it.

I matted the panel with gold cardstock and a black card base. I added a gold die-cut “Hugs” sentiment with a black shadow. I added a gold heat embossed sentiment “I’m here for You”. Both die cut and stamped sentiments are from Altenew.

Here is another card I made, this one with a die-cut “Hello” and a gold heat embossed “You’re so Kind” sentiment.
