Papercrafters Unite Against Racism Blog Hop

Welcome to the Papercrafters Unite Against Racism hop! If you are hopping along, you have just come from Carrie Rhoades.

When I saw Justine Hovey’s post on You tube about a blog hop, I immediately jumped at the chance to participate and support this very important cause! The goal of this hop is to come together to stand with our crafty sisters and brothers of colour and to show our support in the never-ending fight for equality all over the world. Through this blog hop, I hope to learn more about our fellow crafters, gain knowledge about others perspectives. I believe that if we all got to know each other better, that would be one step closer to achieving this goal.

Before I get into my card inspirations, I wanted to share my story, coming from my own perspective. I was very hesitant at first to share but Justine encouraged me. We all need to tell our story so that we can all understand each other better. I hope that thru this blog post, you learn something about me.

I am from and live in the Philippines – born and raised. My paternal grandfather is Spanish, my paternal grandmother French. My mom is a mix of Chinese/Filipino.  So as far as my ethnicity goes, I’m a true hodge podge!

I am married to an Indian man who moved to the Manila from Mumbai about 30 years ago.  We have three teenage girls who are a wonderful mix of races just like me.  My second child is light skinned like me but with blue gray eyes.  My two other daughters are olive skinned with dark eyes.

I identify as a Filipino but yet get questioned all the time “You’re Filipino?! But you don’t look like a Filipino”. I don’t think it’s meant to be hurtful, but it is based from what they percieve a Filipino should look like. We are shaped in one way or another of our personal biases. The movement that is currently rocking our world, challenges these biases and provides us the perfect opportunity learn and change our perceptions.

Now it’s time for the card inspiration.

My first card uses a sentiment from the My Monthly Hero December 2019 kit. I chose the sentiment “One World is Enough For All of Us” which I found quite fitting for this blog hop.

I already had a galaxy panel which was an extra from another project. I used a Wonky Die from Simon Says Stamp and cut out a frame. I use the inside of the frame for my first card pictured here. I heat embossed the sentiment with white embossing powder and included the two hands. Then I foam mounted it on top of another panel also cut out from the biggest of the Wonky Die.

For my second card, I used an older MMH kit from August 2017. I decided to make it a shaker card using the left over galaxy frame from the first card. I also white heat embossed the sentiment ” We’re all made of Stardust” along with the swirls of stardust. I used clear flat sequins for the shaker element.

We all have our own challenges, but we all can learn from each other — that’s the only way we can improve and move forward. I strongly believe that if we all got to know each other better, we grow in appreciation of each other’s differences and uniqueness. I would love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments below.   6. Your cards are beautiful! It sounds like this MMH box was perfect for the message of this hop! I love that you got two cards out of that one background die, too. I haven’t tried galaxy backgrounds but I really want to give it a try!

    I really appreciate you sharing your story, Anna. You have such a unique and rich heritage! I learned something important from reading your post. I didn’t realize that it would be hurtful to have someone say that you don’t look Filipino. It makes perfect sense because I can imagine it could feel like someone saying you don’t belong, especially if the different members of your family look different from each other because that could feel especially critical of your family. “I would have guessed you were…” or “You don’t look ….” are comments that I know I have made to people before. I didn’t mean to be hurtful, more just to keep the conversation going and talk about their family/heritage, but I can see now the flaw in that way of thinking. I am humbled and appreciative of this post. Thank you for sharing your story and your talent in the name of unity. 💕

    1. Thank you so much Teri for reading my blog! It means the world to me. Creating galaxy backgrounds are one of my favorites things to create! There’s just something about it that just makes me feel like so insignificant and significant at the same time. I am not immune to my own biases but I’m trying to move past those as well.. Important thing is that I’m learning to do better. 😊

  9. I”d love getting to know you better on another level! I love that there are so many differences among us and yet so many similarities. I have always felt that way, but it hurts when your first name becomes an insult for a rude, obnoxious, privileged woman intolerant of others, when nothing could be further from the truth. Sadly no one is exempt from hate from others. Human nature discriminates on many levels. I hope we learn as a race to recognize that because we may fix one only to encourage another. Thank you for sharing your history and heritage with us!

    1. If it wasn’t for this wonderful world of papercrafting, we would never have met! For that I am truly grateful. I agree with you – intolerance and discrimination come in many forms, and affect so many people regardless of race or origin. But it’s thru new found friendships such as ours that I find hope!

  16. My kids are also mixed race- I am German descent, my husband is Trinidad descent. They ran up quickly in the summer. Love your last card especially because I also have the MMH August 2017 kit.
