AECP Let it Shine with Pearlescent Watercolors

Shine, Shine, Shine! Who doesn’t like a little shine on their cards? I certainly do.

A long while back I received a pack of Rosie’s Studio foiled vellum as a gift from a friend. It sat in the recesses of my printed paper pack drawer and I chanced upon it while trying to “konmari” my craft supplies albeit unsuccessfully!

This was a jumping off point to creating my card for Altenew Academy Let it Shine class. I’ve taken this class a long while back but it was so nice to revist it and reacquaint myself with the different techniques of adding shine to my projects. Link to the class in my supply list below.

The first thing I did was heat emboss the Handpicked bouquet stamp outline on watercolor paper using the beautiful Altenew Rose Gold embossing powder.

For the watercolors, I bought some inexpensive ZIG pearlescent jewel watercolors from my local craft store. I was totally inspired by the uber talented Erum Tasneem (@glitternswirls on IG) for my watercoloring technique. She has this inate ability to make creating wonderful watercolor flowers look so easy! And it is!

After watercoloring the image, I then die cut it with the coordinating die and set it aside.

To construct my card, I took a 5.5″x4.25″ folded card and heat embossed the front with the same Rose Gold embossing powder using Altenew Pinstripe background stamp. Then I cut 3″ off the front leaving a 1.25″ pinstripe piece. Then I adhered the same size foiled vellum to the back of the cut piece then added gold washi tape to cover the seam. To hide the “seam” behind the front of the card, I adhered same size piece of Peony Hero Hues cardstock from Hero Arts to create a backing for the foiled vellum. I then adhered the Handpicked Bouquet die cut image to the card and called it done!

If you don’t have pearlescent watercolors, you can try to add Perfect Pearls to your watercolors. Put some Perfect Pearls powder in a mist spray bottle with water and use this mixture with your watercolors instead of plain water. This is what I used to do before I bought pearlescent watercolors. Alternatively, you can also use an irridescent ink to add to your pigments.
